Soldiers of WW1: Superheroes, Heroes or Common People
Everybody knows about WW1 and its horrible repercussions. But few people have made a research and have learned more about the SOLDIERS. Anybody who has, he/she would find unbelievable what these people have been through and how brave they actually were.
Soldiers knew that they would face almost certain death on the battlefield. Day after day they would witness the annihilation of their friends, never knowing if or when they would be next. Although that they knew there wouldn't be happy end for them, many young boys, like 16-year old Herbert Burden, lied that they were older so they could join the war and serve their countries. It's extremely horrific and at the same time really moving to think of the way that many of them died. There were many executions. When it the time for them to be executed, they would ask not to be blindfolded but they would stare down the barrels of the guns which would kill them. That's how much bravery they carried. The saddest thing is that many of them were just young boys who had left their families to defend their country. Military Justice was really harsh but life was harsher. They didn't want pardons for villains. All they wanted was justice for people who were shot for insubordination because they refused to put on a hat, or who fell asleep at their post, or were just so terrified they simply could not cope. Also it was a sign to ask the enemy to stop firing, and they did. They could only dig down a few feet and cover them with a bit of soil, burying them where they lay. The thought never left them that they could be next.
In the beginning they were common people but when they joined this war they became heroes and after that... SUPERHEROES. They went through so many dangerous and violent situations, experienced death, faced him their eyes open and of course many times saved lives. They fought with courage and dignity and never gave up so they deserve the admiration and the respect form our generation.
